Harvard-Westlake launches athletics app

The Harvard-Westlake Athletics app launched on Sept. 16 and it has been a huge success. Many students love the numerous features the app offers. For example, being able to easily access information about school sports including such as game results and team schedules.

Anyone can view almost all of the Harvard-Westlake (HW) sports, with the only exceptions being baseball, lacrosse, and softball. These sports aren’t on the app since the schedules for these spring sports haven’t yet been made but the HW athletic department hopes to put the missing sports on the app within six to eight weeks.

Each sport that is on the app has its own unique page with pages for the Varsity, JV and if applicable, freshman teams. On each team page, students can view their upcoming schedule and or look at the results of their previous game, in which people, in select cases, students can read a Chronicle article written about that game.

For upcoming games, people can view where and when the game is, along with directions to the high school or any other venue the game is located. This has turned out to be a very helpful feature as it allows students to see how far away road games are, and if there will or will not be traffic.

One of the more important features on the app is that for the select games that are streamed on HW Television, anyone can watch those games straight from the app. This feature will be very helpful for students that can’t make the games to be able to watch their friends. This feature is equally important for parents who can’t make the game to watch their kids play.

On the team pages, students can see pictures and photos from games that have already happened. These photos come from various sources and allow students to see their fellow peers in action.

Another exciting feature on the athletics app is that certain teams have had outside newspapers write about them, and for these select teams, there are links on their page to view the certain articles that have been written about them outside of Harvard-Westlake.

The feedback on the app has varied, but the majority opinion of the app is that it’s very helpful and resourceful.

When asked about why she likes the app, Jade Stanford ’22 said, “The app is very helpful because it has my full sports schedule all in one place.” Stanford said that before the app all of her games and schedules for her sports “were in different places” but now she says, “the app has fixed that problem.”

However, not all feedback has been positive. The app only features high school sports, leaving out all 7th and 8th-grade sports. When asked how he felt about not being included in a school app, Jack Kelman ’23 said, “I feel excluded by not being in a school-wide app that’s made for the whole school community.” Jack went on to say that he feels that all 7th and 8th-grade sports “should also be included with the high school sports.”

Overall, the app has been very productive and helpful for students and will only gain more attraction and praise if they add the missing sports to the app.
