Anthony Ulloa ‘14, the West Coast Head of Operations for Bird, spoke to students on Dec. 6 in an after school meeting about his experience at Bird. Bird is an electric scooter company which provides users with transportation through the use of an app. This meeting, organized by Jonathan Damico ‘19, Tyler Kim ‘11, Lucas Gelfond ‘19 and Jakob Amster ’19, focused on informing students about problem-solving in the startup world.

Ulloa explained to students about his experience working at Bird and how he uses his everyday life to solve problems as they arise. Students learned what working for such a startup would be like and how to use practicality to solve the unending problems presented in such a market.

“It was a really great experience. I learned a lot about different aspects of the business world and enjoyed the presentation,” Joey Schoenberg ‘22 said.

Ulloa’s visit focused on educating students who look to a future in entrepreneurship.

“I hope that people appreciate the level of vision you need to have [to succeed as a startup]. In many cases it is not number driven but driven by innovation and creativity. It is looking at a problem and thinking of all different angles around it and… applying memories and knowledge to solving the problem,” Ulloa said when asked what he hoped students took away from his presentation.

HW Venture often brings in alumni involved in entrepreneurship such as Ulloa for such presentations to inspire students in their own entrepreneurship.

“Venture is all about inspiring people to do whatever they are excited about and giving them the resources to do it….We’ve had kids come out of this school and start their own companies…This was before we ever had a venture area. People at this school can do anything…..Thats what [Ulloa’s visit] is about….entrepreneurship and inspiration,” faculty supervisor Rob Levin said.
