HW football makes comeback in season

The Harvard-Westlake (HW) football season didn’t get off to a great start but the team has improved throughout the year and are on track for another winning season. The season started off with a home game against Birmingham and in a high scoring game, HW lost 30-21. Although they lost, HW quarterback Jameson Wang ‘20 threw two touchdowns and a combined 229 yards. Harvard-Westlake then lost their next game to Venice High School in another high scoring affair.

In their third game of the year, the Wolverines finally put all their tools together and in a team effort beat Crespi 34-10. In this game, Harvard-Westlake’s running back, Sultan Daniels ‘19, broke out for 181 rushing yards and scored 3 touchdowns. Daniels performance against Crespi was just a glimpse of the year he is having. Daniels has performed exceptionally in every game he has played this year and is a big reason why the Harvard-Westlake football team has been able to turn their season around.

Not to be ignored in the football teams success are the freshmen’s contributions to the team. One big freshman impact this year has been cornerback, Colin Luse ‘22. With already two interceptions, Luse has gotten off to a great start in his first year on varsity. When asked about how the freshmen have contributed to the team this year, Luse responded saying that the freshmen have been “real big contributors” and that their motto has been “next man up.” He explained how when the freshmen make a mistake, someone always steps up and makes a great play, picking his teammate up for the previous mistake. Another great freshman this year has been wide receiver, Jason “JT” Thompson ‘22. During our conversation about how the team has worked together this year, Thompson said that “every player on this team plays for the person next to them and we only grow closer as the season progresses.” Thompson also said, “I’m thankful for the opportunities I’ve received and I’m going to continue to make the best of them,” when asked about his thoughts on the season.
