New York Fashion Week Introduces Upcoming Trends

Fashion’s biggest event, New York Fashion Week, transported buyers to a colorful, fashionable wonderland in the heart of New York City. The long-awaited event occurs semi-annually, once in February for the Fall season and once in September for next year’s Spring season. This year’s Spring/ Summer shows occurred from Sept. 5 to Sept. 12. The event shows celebrities, reporters and buyers the newest collections by famous designers such as Oscar De La Renta, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. This week is one of the four major fashion weeks in the world, the other three being in London, Paris and Milan. Supermodels walked the runways to model the newest high fashion designs. NYFW outfits are infamous for both stirring controversy, as well as starting fashion trends.

Celebrities such as Emma Roberts, Adriana Lima, A$AP Rocky and Selena Gomez sat front row in this year’s shows, getting a glimpse of clothing hitting stores soon. These shows are known for displaying over-the-top makeup and hair, paving the way for upcoming beauty trends. Vogue Australia stated that flowers grew from curly hair and eyelids were covered in bright yellow eyeshadow at the Rodarte show.

Some of the most popular trends from the shows include denim, neon colors, and mixed prints. Denim was seen in almost every show, being worn under dresses, with coats, in the form of jackets, and many other unique ways. Neon colors were seen all over the runway, being on headpieces, shoes, jeans and more. The LA Times explained that color was a main aspect of apparel, and eye-catching hues were prominent on the runway. Mixed prints were also popular; models sported tops with stripes and bottoms with leopard print at many shows.

This time of year is like the start of the new year for fashion. The next major supermodels are discovered walking the shows, up-and-coming designers are discovered, and consumers get a preview of upcoming fashion for the next season.

This years fashion week was a very eventful one. Celebrity guests’ apparel was quite controversial, from Justin Bieber wearing a baseball cap and sweatpants to Cardi B wearing a cheetah print pantsuit to shows, many were debating about what appropriate attire was for attending a fashion show.

Some of the highlights of the week included the show for Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty Line, the Harper’s Bazaar Icon party, where a fight broke out between rappers Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. 70-year-old fashion house Longchamp also had its very first fashion show this NYFW. Some of the biggest parties of the year also took place this week. These parties were extremely exclusive, and celebrated successful releases for the upcoming seasons. The most talked about parties included the Harper’s Bazaar Icons party, the Ralph Lauren 50th Anniversary Gala, and the Longchamp 70th anniversary celebration. Celebrities were making headlines, from supermodel Kendall Jenner wearing a see-through dress to the Longchamp event to Kanye West requesting for a reporter to be removed from the red carpet at the Ralph Lauren party.

This year’s NYFW was also a time for new beginnings in the industry. Rihanna had two pregnant models walk in the show for her Savage x Fenty line, Chromat featured a model with a prosthetic leg, and Calvin Klein models went makeup-free on the runway. These were all firsts for NYFW, and opened doors for more inclusivity in the fashion industry.

All sorts of textures, from silk to fur to mesh were used to create slip dresses, baggy coats, and hats. The outfits were all eye-catching, featuring bright colors, fringes swaying side to side on boots and dresses and tops with puffy sleeves.

Shoes were a prominent aspect of apparel this NYFW. Sneakers have been taking over outfits, whether they were chunky Chanels or graphic high tops. Boot were also paired with everything, from high-waisted jeans to sheer maxi dresses. All sorts of boots were worn, some being thigh-high, and some barely reaching the ankles. Shoes are starting to make an outfit, as shown in the Proenza Schouler show, where supermodel Kaia Gerber wore sky-high black boots with a loose button-up ensemble.

This time of year is also the busiest for fashion photographers. Thousands of photographers have jam-packed schedules throughout the week, going from backstage to front row at different shows in a matter of minutes. Some of the most iconic fashion photos are captured during NYFW, and this week was no exception. Photographers captured models’ pre-show rituals backstage, mishaps on the runway, and celebrity guests’ style. At this NYFW, technology also played an important role in making everything happen. All shows were live streamed on Youtube, watched by thousands of people all over the world. Music and special effects were some of the most important parts of shows, and celebrity guests posted some highlights from the shows to their social media pages for fans to see.

Many new designers had shows this NYFW, and introduced audiences to what could be the next Dior. Some up-and-coming designers this season include Prabal Gurung, Laurence and Chico, and Chocheng. These designers’ shows featured unique designs with new patterns and materials. NYFW is where many well-known designers get their big break, so don’t be surprised if you hear about many new brands around this time of year.

Street style plays an important role in NYFW. Outfits worn by celebrity guests, journalists, social media influencers, and regular guests of shows are photographed and can be seen all over social media. Some street style trends that were common were puffy coats, loose- fitting tops, tailored pant suits. Fashionista.com said that suits appeared on the runway several times, showing up in prints such as houndstooth and gingham. These were worn by celebrity guests like Priyanka Chopra, Gigi Hadid and Hailey Baldwin.

There were an infinite amount of memorable moments from this year’s NYFW. For her Savage x Fenty show, Rihanna had professional dancers grace the runway, with a complex dance number performed on the runway, choreographed by celebrity choreographer Parris Goebel. The Blonds had a Disney Villain- themed show, with stars like Paris Hilton strutting on the runway. Cardi B and Nicki Minaj had a full-blown fight at the Harper’s Bazaar party, where shoes were thrown and verbal insults were fired. Cardi was seen being escorted from the event with a large bump on her head.

This year’s New York Fashion Week was quite the unforgettable one.
