The varsity football team’s season came to an end on Nov. 10, where they lost to St. Joseph’s High School 44-49. The team finished with an overall record of 8-3, and a league record of 3-2. Even though the season didn’t end the way the team hoped, players said they were proud of how the team played, and that they are excited for the new season.
“I feel our season was very successful for our team this year. We bounced back from our losing record (3-8), and had an outstanding year (8-3). We overcame adversity and found our way to a winning record, even though we did not finish how we wanted to finish,” quarterback Jameson Wang 20’ said.
Program Head and varsity head Coach Scot Ruggles resigned on Nov.16. He was part of the program for eight years and became head coach in 2012. His overall record with the team was 36-30. He was known for his unique and fast tempo offense and great football mind.
“I had a great time at during my six years at the school. We have accomplished some amazing things at the football program, and I’m sad to leave. I’m excited for this new chapter in my life,” Ruggles said.
Next year will come with many changes. Players said that they think that it will be tough with a new coach and that lots of players are going to have to take on bigger roles.
“Next year’s team is going to be tremendously different. Our head coach resigned, so we are going to have a whole new coaching staff. Also, the seniors that are leaving contributed a lot this season, and we are going to lose a lot of talent where they played. That means a lot of younger kids are going to have to step up,” Wang said.
Overall, the team said they feel that this season was a successful one and a huge improvement from last year.  They hope that even with the loss of key players from last year, they will have a better season next year.
The middle school football team won the Delphic League Championship, defending their title, and finished with a 5-1 overall record and a 3-0 league record. The Wolverines lost to Oaks Christian earlier in the season, but went on to beat them 32-20 in the championship game. The team set out with the goal of winning the championship this year and said they feel very accomplished.
Earlier in the season, the team said they were still trying to find chemistry within the roster. As the season wrapped up, players said that the chemistry was much improved, and that the team really got closer as the season progressed.
“The season went really well this year. We won the championship, which was great, and I think the team grew. It was also really fun, and I made a lot of friends,” center Zach Greene ‘23 said.
This year quarterback Cole Tannenbaum ‘22 did very well, and the team said they credit him as a big part of their success. Players said that he was a great role model on and off the field, and really showed them how to be good football players. Wide receiver Jason Thompson ‘22 was also a big part of the team’s success, scored 12 touchdowns throughout the course of the year. Thompson earned Delphic League Honors for his performance throughout the season.
“Thompson was amazing, he scored practically every time he had the ball. He played both ways and always contributed. We would not have gotten as far without him” linemen Aiden Cho ‘22 said.
