The upper school LaFemme club collaborated with Empower HerFuture from Scripps College, hosts an event called Empower Conference on Nov. 11. The co-founders of Empower HerFuture are Madeline Guyette and Marie-Nicole Jeffroy-Meynard. This is the first time the school has held an event combining these two clubs.
Conference attendees participated in many activities such as the ChaCha slide, writing games and public speaking. Furthermore, the attendees were told to write positive things about themselves and answer questions about what a woman truly is. The conference also featured who told the audience about their lives, Rudi Bakhtiar, Producer for Reuters in Washington, D.C. and former CNN News Anchor, who talked about her trip to Afghanistan. Another speaker, Penny Abeywardena, New York City’s Commissioner for International Affairs talked about the advantages and disadvantages of being a woman.
The attendees said that they really enjoyed listening to the speakers.
“I think that this is a great opportunity to listen to some women talk about their life and their experiences as a woman,” LaFemme club member Kate Von Mende ’18 said.
The speakers were asked some questions about their lives, while others talked about what they did to have success. Many of the speakers commented on the hardships they went through in their jobs. According to attendees, there were many tears shed, making it even more meaningful.
