Science and communications teacher Alex Ras and her husband Kurtis welcomed an addition to their family. Calvin James Ras was born on Oct. 18, three days later than the expected due date. About eight months ago, Ras found out that she was pregnant with her first child.
“[My husband and I] were both super excited, since we didn’t expect it to happen as early as it did. We immediately started to plan his first Disneyland trip,” Ras said.
Leading up to the birth, Ras said she made sure Calvin had a nursery and that the house was ready for the baby.
“We stocked up on frozen dinners and fun sparkling waters so we wouldn’t have to go to the grocery store for a while,” Ras said.
Despite the months of preparation, Ras said she is still adjusting to the obstacles of having a baby. She said that certain tasks, like responding to emails, take longer now because of Calvin’s crying and other needs. Sleep deprivation is also a growing issue for Ras.
“I feel like a full night’s sleep is a thing of the past. Definitely still adjusting [to Calvin], and he doesn’t have a solid sleep schedule at all,” Ras said.
Leslie Wang will be teaching Ras’s science classes, and debate teachers Travis Fife and Adam Rose will cover her debate classes. She will be returning to campus at the end of February.
