The dance program put on a performance that was anything but ordinary, on the 14th of March. With colorful lights, bold costumes, and exciting choreography, the show kept the audience entertained from start to finish. What truly made this performance stand out was the surprising addition of a robot.
The performance took place in Saperstein theater which was transformed by an incredible set. Large moving panels, glowing lights, and hanging decorations gave the stage a futuristic feel. The set was not just background; it became part of the performance itself. Dancers moved around and through it, making it feel like a living world.
The theme of the show was about the connection between humans and technology. Each dance told a different story, using movement and music to explore how we interact with machines and how they might change us. In one piece, dancers acted like they were being controlled by invisible forces, showing how easy it is to become programmed by the digital world.
One of the show’s highlight was when robot rolled onto the stage.. The audience gasped as the machine began to move in sync with the dancers. It wasn’t just a prop; it was part of the choreography. The robot spun, lifted its arms, and even “danced” in time with the music. The combination of human talent and technology created a moment that was both exciting and thought-provoking.
Students, teachers, and families gave the performance a loud round of applause at the end. It was clear that a lot of hard work and creativity went into the show. By blending dance with science fiction elements, the performance proved that art can grow and change with the times; and still keep its heart.
As performer Jojo Gott ’28 says “The robot being able to be in sync with the dancers was extraordinary”.
The show was unique, something that had never been performed in the form of a performance before. Performing Arts Teachers, Joe Schenck, and Visual Arts Teacher, Flavia Zuniga-West ’02, co-directed the show.
“The genre is steampunk. That kind of informed our costume choices and what the scenery looked like. The idea was that it’s this crew of steampunk travelers aboard an airship, and they are returning to their home planet, that their ancestors had fled generations ago to explore what shape the planet was in now.” Schenck
This revolutionary idea came to life and took everyone in the auditorium by shock. This was definitely one to remember.
